Cang Zhu oil has a fresh, sharp, earthy aroma that opens and clears the nasal passages, leaving a pungent, bittersweet taste in the mouth. It appears to enhance mental clarity and foster deep reflection. Atractilodis Lancea, the most fragrant variety, grows wild mainly in Hubei and Jiangsu provinces. The rhizome is harvested in spring or autumn and sun-dried. The interior of the rhizome, the part used medicinally, is reddish in color.
