Cinnamon Twig is an herb that releases the exterior. It warms and unblocks the channels, assists yang, and transforms thin mucus.

Primary Actions and Uses

  • Releases the exterior and assists yang: For exterior wind-cold patterns, especially when deficiency is present, with sweating, aversion to wind, and fever.
  • Warms and unblocks the channels: For wind-cold-damp Bi syndrome with arthralgia, cold hands and feet, and muscle aches.
  • Warms the yang and transforms thin mucus: For phlegm-retention in the chest due to yang deficiency, presenting with palpitations, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
  • Assists the Heart yang and unblocks the vessels: For chest pain, palpitations, and irregular pulse due to Heart yang deficiency.
  • Warms the middle burner: For cold from deficiency in the middle jiao with abdominal pain and poor appetite.

Context and Traditional Notes

  • Acrid, sweet, and warm; enters the Heart, Lung, and Bladder channels. Classified in TCM as an herb that releases the exterior—warm, acrid herbs.
  • Gui Zhi is the young twig of Cinnamomum cassia, compared to Rou Gui which is the bark. Gui Zhi is lighter, more dispersing, and better suited for exterior patterns and channel warming rather than deep warming of the interior.
  • Often used in harmonizing formulas such as Gui Zhi Tang for exterior wind-cold with deficiency.
