Hou Po’s affinity lies with the Earth and Metal elements, where its bitter warmth effectively descends Qi and dries dampness. Due to these properties, it is used in Chinese medicine to alleviate stagnation and accumulation in the digestive system, as well as cough and wheezing caused by phlegm blocking the lungs.

Magnolia officinalis is a deciduous tree native to the mountains and valleys of Sichuan, Hubei, and other provinces in China. Its highly aromatic bark, used in traditional Chinese medicine, is harvested from the stems, branches, and roots between April and June. The thick, smooth, oil-rich bark has a purplish hue on the inside and a crystalline sheen.

Practitioners may consider combining Hou Po with Qing Pi essential oil as a top note to enhance blends designed to disperse accumulations.
