Ding Zhi Wan is an essential oil blend inspired by the classical Tang Dynasty formula attributed to Sun Si-Miao, traditionally used to settle the Will, calm the Shen, strengthen Qi, and transform phlegm obstructing the Heart. The blend is especially suited to times of emotional unsettledness, scattered focus, and major life transitions when greater clarity, grounding, and resolve are desired.

Ding Zhi Wan, translated as “Settle the Will,” is a classical formula attributed to the revered Daoist physician Sun Si-Miao of 7th century Tang Dynasty China. The formula appears in his text Beiji Qianjin Yaofang, or Essential Formulas for Emergencies Worth a Thousand Ducats of Gold. Its name refers to the Kidney Zhi, or Will, and the traditional concept of stabilizing one’s inner resolve, remaining true to one’s authentic nature, and finding the motivation and strength to continue forward.

In another sense, Ding Zhi Wan is used to stabilize the mind and emotions. Its traditional actions are to calm the Shen, strengthen Qi, settle an ungrounded or scattered spirit, and transform phlegm obstructing the Heart. This makes the formula especially relevant during periods of crisis, transition, or uncertainty when greater clarity, emotional steadiness, and fortitude are desired.

Traditional use of Ding Zhi Wan includes patterns involving forgetfulness, confusion, fearfulness, unsettled emotions, disturbed sleep, palpitations, and difficulty with memory or mental focus. The formula is composed of Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng), Yuan Zhi (Polygala), Fu Ling (Hoelen), and Shi Chang Pu (Acorus), carried in Bai Zi Ren Carrier Oil at a 5% dilution.

Traditional Practitioner Combinations

For a more sedating, Heart-nourishing, and Spirit-calming effect, practitioners may combine this blend with essential oils such as Suan Zao Ren (zysiphii spinosae), Bai Zi Ren (Pladycladi), or Xie Cao (Valerian). Jasmine or Rose may be added to enhance the aromatic profile and lift the Spirit, while Yun Shan (Black Spruce) or Ya Bai (Thuja) may be incorporated to encourage a sense of quietude.
