Tremella, or "Snow Fungus," is a white, nearly translucent "trembling" fungus that grows on a great variety of trees throughout Asia and in warmer climates worldwide. The mushroom gets the common name of "White Wood Ear" for the way it looks on the decaying logs on which it grows. Chinese and Japanese herbalists have used Tremella for more than 2,000 years.

Tremella may be used on a daily basis as a nutritive supplement, a restorative tonic and to support a healthy respiratory system. Research has shown that Tremella's radical scavenging ability is pronounced to such a degree that one study by the International Journal of Molecular Science concluded that it is a "natural resource of antioxidants."

Tremella replenishes Yin of Lung and Stomach, supplements Moisture, supplements Qi and harmonizes Blood, fortifies the Kidney and replenishes Essence, strengthens the Heart, and nourishes the Brain. It helps allay cough accompanied by Dryness and Heat.

Note: This herb is most often used as a food. Because of its pleasant taste, it is often used as a dessert, cooked with Sm. Nelumbinis Lian Zi and rock sugar.
