Cools heat, inhibits bleeding due to blood heat, stops cough
- Cools the blood and stops bleeding: widely used for various bleeding disorders. Owing to its slightly cold nature, this herb is effectively used in treating patterns of hot blood, but it may be used with warming herbs for bleeding associated with cold patterns.
- Stops cough and expels phlegm: for Lung heat patterns with cough and accumulation of phlegm. Especially important in cases of viscous, difficult-to-expectorate sputum streaked with blood.
- Promotes healing of burns: used topically in powdered form for the early stages of burns over a small to moderate surface area. Also used for hair loss.
- Promotes hair growth
- Clears Damp-Heat for Vaginal discharge due to Damp-Heat
- Dispels Wind-Dampness for Wind-Damp Bi
Processing method
The cleaned leaves are dry-fried over high or medium heat until their surfaces turn dark brown to black and the insides become scorched yellow (charring method). A small amount of water may be sprinkled on them before removing from heat.
How it changes properties
Charring significantly reduces the herb's cold nature, making it less likely to damage the Spleen and Stomach. The astringent, hemostatic effect is enhanced, while the Heat-clearing action is diminished. The carbonized form gains the ability to stop bleeding through adsorption and astringency, regardless of whether the bleeding pattern is Hot or Cold.
When to use this form
Ce Bai Tan is the preferred choice when the primary objective is to halt bleeding. It is particularly vital for patients with Cold-type or deficiency-related bleeding, where the herb's cold property could be detrimental. In practice, when a prescription mentions only 'Ce Bai Ye' for hemostasis, the charred version is usually assumed by default.
