Qing Qi Hua Tan Tang (Clear the Qi and Transform Phlegm Decoction) is a classical TCM formula from the Yi Fang Kao (Investigations of Medical Formulas). It is the primary formula for phlegm-heat obstructing the Lungs. Gua Lou Ren (trichosanthes seed) and Dan Nan Xing (bile-processed arisaema) clear heat and dissolve phlegm; Zhi Shi (unripe bitter orange) and Xing Ren (apricot kernel) descend rebellious Lung qi and stop coughing; Huang Qin clears Lung heat; Ban Xia and Chen Pi dry dampness and transform phlegm; and Fu Ling supports the Spleen to prevent phlegm formation at its source.
