This formula treats blood stasis due to cold which causes the retention of the lochia with the discharge of turbid and decaying blood.  This formula is designed for the period immediately after childbirth when the nutritive qi and blood are deficient.  This requires tonification and nourishment. This condition is complicated by abdominal pain caused by blood stasis.  This formula is designed to generate new blood while transforming blood stasis.  This formula should only be used when:

  1. There is obstruction due to stasis of blood
  2. The blood is deficient
  3. There is cold presenting

Chinese Symptomology: Retention of the lochia accompanied by cold and pain in the lower abdomen; Immobile massses in the lower abdomen with pain and tenderness; Abdominal spasms and tension; Amenorrhea with retention of the lochia
Contraindications: Contraindicated in cases with blood stasis due to heat in the blood or postpartum hemorrhage because the warm, blood-invigorating nature of these herbs tends to aggravate such conditions. It is also contraindicated during pregnancy or in cases with bleeding diathesis or any active hemorrhagic disorder. With respect to postpartum use, if there is already normal discharge of lochia and only slight abdominal pain, this formula may be too harsh in its action of breaking up blood stasis and should therefore be modified. - Bensky
