Long Dan Xie Gan Tang (Gentian Decoction to Drain the Liver) is a classical formula attributed to Li Dong-Yuan and recorded in the Yi Fang Ji Jie. It is the primary formula for draining excess fire from the Liver and Gallbladder channels and for clearing damp-heat from the lower burner. The chief herb, Long Dan Cao (gentian root), powerfully drains Liver and Gallbladder fire; Huang Qin and Zhi Zi assist in clearing heat; Ze Xie, Mu Tong, and Che Qian Zi drain damp-heat downward and out through the urine; and Dang Gui and Sheng Di Huang nourish the blood to prevent damage from the formula’s strong draining action.
