  • Calm The Stomach Decoction dries dampness, improves the Spleen's transportive function, promotes the movement of qi, and harmonizes the Stomach

Ping Wei San, translated as Calm the Stomach Powder, is one of the foundational formulas in TCM for addressing dampness obstructing the middle burner. It is the primary classical formula for drying dampness and restoring the Spleen's healthy transportive function, with the Stomach harmonized as a secondary aim.

      • Dries dampness in the middle burner to support digestive function
      • Improves the Spleen's ability to transport and transform fluids and nutrients
      • Promotes the smooth movement of qi through the middle burner
      • Harmonizes the Stomach to relieve stagnation and associated discomfort
Ping Wei San addresses excessive Dampness accumulating in the Spleen and Stomach. Dampness disrupts digestion and blocks the normal flow of Qi. The Spleen is responsible for transforming food and fluids, and the Stomach receives and "ripens" food. When Dampness overwhelms this system, the Spleen's transport function stalls.
When the Spleen cannot move fluids properly, turbid Dampness settles in the middle, causing a bloated, heavy feeling in the abdomen, loss of appetite and taste, nausea or vomiting, loose stools, a feeling of heaviness and sluggishness throughout the body, and an irresistible urge to sleep. The tongue coating is thick, white, and greasy. The pulse feels “moderate" or "relaxed", reflecting the sluggish movement of Qi through waterlogged tissues.
When Dampness obstructs the middle, simply tonifying the Spleen will not work. The pathogenic Dampness must be actively dried and dispersed. At the same time, the flow of Qi must be corrected, because stagnant Qi and Dampness reinforce each other. "To treat Dampness, first move the Qi; when Qi flows freely, Dampness resolves on its own." The formula's warm, drying, and Qi-moving approach restores the Spleen's ability to transport and the Stomach's ability to descend.
