An elegant, ecologically grown Rougui from Wusandi village—smooth, woody, and refined, offering a restrained aromatic profile that favors depth and balance over flash.

Rougui Rock Oolong from Wusandi village presents a distinctive, ecologically grown expression of one of Wuyi’s most planted cultivars. Produced by Mr. Wu—a direct descendant of the Wu Sangui lineage and a specialist in Shui Xian—this Rougui diverges from the high-fragrance, acrid-bodied styles dominating the commodity market. Instead, it offers a heartier, smoother mouthfeel with tall, expansive wood tones and subtle, demure aromatics.

This light-to-medium roast tea was crafted from bushes planted nearly 40 years ago and now being developed toward Gao Cong (“High Bush”) designation. The result is a nuanced, unconventional take on Rougui that avoids overwhelming floral theatrics in favor of lasting balance, texture, and drinkability.

Terroir & Heritage

Wusandi is a secluded village with centuries of tea history, known for its pristine environment, spring-fed soils, and high-elevation growing conditions. Its teas are considered among the best alternatives to Zhengyan (core scenic area) Wuyi teas, often praised for their clean energy and honest expression of cultivar character. Mr. Wu's family has cultivated tea here since the Qing dynasty, with surviving study books and oral histories connecting his work to generations of Shui Xian mastery.

Unlike the more commercial “matou rougui” (horse meat Rougui) styles that prioritize exaggerated aroma at the expense of texture and complexity, Mr. Wu’s approach offers a reprieve—guided by the complementary philosophy often summed up in Wuyi: “Aromatic as Rougui, mellow as Shui Xian”.

Brewing Instructions

  • Gong Fu Style: Use 6–7g per 100–120ml gaiwan or Yixing pot. Boiling water (100°C). Rinse briefly. Start with 10–15 second infusions, increasing time gradually with each brew.
  • Western Style: Use 3g per 250ml. Steep at 95–100°C for 2–3 minutes. Suitable for multiple infusions.
  • Vessels: Best brewed in unglazed clay or thick-walled ceramic

Why It’s Special

This tea stands apart as a thoughtful, terroir-driven Rougui with restraint and depth. It offers a rewarding experience for seasoned yancha drinkers seeking complexity without flash, and for anyone interested in the highland alternatives to Wuyi’s scenic park teas. With its clean ecological roots, family lineage, and elegant execution, this Wusandi Rougui is both a daily drinker and a connoisseur’s find.
