Ban Lan Gen is used in China for a wide variety of viral infections. It is made into an instant tea for sore throats and hepatitis. It can be used topically for herpes simplex. It is good for carbuncles, oral ulcerations, bacterial infections and viral infections.

This is northern Bei Ban Lan Gen and is the standard plant according to the Chinese pharmacopia. Southern Nan Ban Lan Gen is Rx. et Rz. Baphicacanthis is considered to be of inferior quality. If the precise plant is unclear, only the name Ban Lan Gen is used.

Bei Ban Lan Gen can substitute for Fol. Isatidis (Da Qing Ye).

Bei Ban Lan Gen, Fol. Isatidis (Da Qing Ye) and Indigo Naturalis (Qing Dai) all originate from the same plants, cool Heat in the Blood, and reduce skin blotches. Qing Dai is best for toxic sores due to Fire and Heat, rashes from Warm toxins, hemoptysis and hematemesis and childhood convulsions. Da Qing Ye and Bei Ban Lan Gen both cool Heat toxin in the Heart and Stomach, but Da Qing Ye is usually used for rashes from Warm toxin, while Bei Ban Lan Gen is used for massive head febrile disorders and throat obstruction due to mumps.

Herb/Drug Interactions

Patients who allergic to sulfonylureas such as tolbutamide (Orinase), glipizide (Glucotrol) and glyburide (DiaBeta/Micronase) and sulfonamides such as sulfanilamide, sulfisoxazole, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim/Septra) and erythromycin/sulfisoxazole (Pediazole) may also be allergic to Ban Lan Gen.

Use with caution when taken in conjunction with anticoagulants such as heparin, warfarin (Coumadin) and enoxaparin (Lovenox) or antiplatelet such as aspirin, dipyridamole (Persantine) and clopidogrel (Plavix).
