Strengthen Spleen Qi and eliminate dampness*
High cholesterol is a modern disease. There is not a specific name in Chinese medicine directly related to high cholesterol. However, Chinese herbs are effectively used to manage this condition. Decades of research has shows that the mechanism of cholesterol balance in Chinese Medicine can be broadly divided into four categories: 1) Promotion of intestinal discharges by increasing the secretion of bile and speeding up the movement of the bowels; 2) Affectation of competitive inhibition of intestinal lipid absorption; 3) Inhibition of lipid syntheses; 4) Affectation of lipid distribution, transfer, and clearing, to promote oxidation of the liver within liver decomposition.*
Treating this condition involves the application of two principles: to enhance and to open. to enhance refers to enhancing the function of the spleen, kidney, liver, and gallbladder. To open refers to keeping the GI tract and gallbladder duct open.*
In the Jiang Zhi Yin formula, Jue Ming Zi, Chai Hu, and Yu Jin are used to balance the liver. He Shou Wu and Jin Ying Zi are employed to support the kidneys. Yi Yi Ren, Yin Chen, and Ze Xie are used to enhance the spleen function dealing with the stagnation of dampness and phlegm. The two main ingredients Da Huang and Shan Zha are used to keep the digestive tract open.*
