Mai Men Dong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction) is a classical formula from Zhang Zhong-Jing’s Jin Gui Yao Lue. It addresses Lung and Stomach yin deficiency with rebellious qi, presenting with a persistent dry cough or the sensation of qi rushing upward. The large dose of Mai Men Dong (ophiopogon) moistens the Lung and Stomach and generates fluids, while Ban Xia (pinellia) in a small dose descends rebellious qi without drying, and Ren Shen, Jing Mi, Da Zao, and Gan Cao support the Stomach and middle burner. Available from TCM Zone as concentrated granules in 42 individual packets.

Pattern: Lung atrophy due to heat
Chinese Symptomology: Coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing up of phlegm that is difficult to expectorate, or spitting of saliva, a dry and uncomfortable sensation in the throat, dry mouth, heat of the palms and soles
Contraindications: Caution in cases with high fever and irritabiity, where the pathogenic influence remains in the exterior, and the qi and yin have yet to be affected. Contrainidicated in cases with dampness or Lung atrophy due to cold from deficiency
