In Chinese herbal medicine, Sheng Jiang (fresh ginger) and Gan Jiang (dried, baked ginger) serve different functions, as in Gan Jiang essential oil. The fresh root expels cold from the surface and warms the lungs, while the dried root nourishes the interior and strengthens Yang Qi.

Fresh ginger root essential oil emits a lively, invigorating, and pungent aroma that stimulates and refreshes the senses, helps clear congestion, and soothes the stomach.

Adding a drop of hot honey to a cup of hot honey water warms the surface and helps prevent chills at the start of a common cold or can be used to soothe nausea.

A small amount of Sheng Jiang added to blends for winter colds or flu can help warm the lungs and open the surface to expel pathogenic factors. This process clears congestion and alleviates coughing. Sheng Jiang may be combined with other essential oils such as Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Jing Jie (Schizonepeta) for this purpose.

Fresh ginger essential oil is also a valuable ingredient in blends for addressing digestion issues caused by external factors or food poisoning, which can lead to nausea and diarrhea.

For food poisoning or digestive flu-like conditions, combine Sheng Jiang with Zi Su Ye (Perilla Leaf essential oil).
