Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) is one of the great classical formulas from Zhang Zhong-Jing’s Shang Han Lun. It is the strongest of the three Cheng Qi Tang formulas and is classified in the category of harsh purgatives. The formula employs Da Huang, Mang Xiao, Zhi Shi, and Hou Po to vigorously clear accumulated heat and dry stool obstruction from the Yang Brightness stage. Pattern: Heat excess in the yang brightness organs, heat clumping with circumfluence, or heat inversion.
Chinese Symptomology: Yang brightness: Severe constipation and flatulence, focal distention and abdominal fullness, abdominal pain that increases upon pressure, a tense and firm abdomen. Heat clumping with circumfluence: green, watery, and foul-smelling diarrhea accompanied by the same abdominal signs and symptoms outlined above. Internal heat excess manifesting with heat inversion: fever, cold extremities, thirst, sweating from the head, constipation, scanty and dark urine, disorientation, delirious speech, cracked lips. In severe cases there may be tidal fevers, delirious speech, and profuse sweating from the palms and soles. Contraindications: According to early-modern physician, He Lian-Chen: conditions where a pathogen remains in the protective level and exterior; hardness in the epigastric area; a flushed face; patients who habitually eat only small amounts; patients who stop eating as the disorder develops; frequent vomiting; a slow pulse; spontaneous sweating and normal urination. This formula may cause vomiting or severe diarrhea. for weak patients, it should be used only when absolutely necessary, and then with the addition of tonic herbs. contraindicated during pregnancy.
