This traditional formula gently alleviates constipation caused by intestinal dryness and heat. It moistens the bowels, clears mild heat, and promotes Qi flow to restore regular bowel movements. It is especially suitable for older adults, postpartum women, or anyone experiencing dry, hard stools that are difficult to pass, along with frequent urination.
This passage explains the main pattern addressed by Ma Zi Ren Wan. When excess heat builds up in the stomach and intestines, it scorches the body's fluids. The spleen, which normally distributes these fluids throughout the body, becomes constrained (pi yue, ) by the strong stomach heat and can only send fluids downward to the bladder rather than moistening the intestines. As a result, there is frequent urination and dry, hard stools. Huo Ma Ren and Xing Ren directly moisten the dry intestines; Bai Shao replenishes lost fluids; and Da Huang, with Zhi Shi and Hou Po, clears the heat and moves the stagnation.
