Bidens 6 is a new formulation based on modern research indicating antiviral activities of its ingredients; these herbs have some antibacterial actions as well. The primary ingredient, bidens, has been shown to inhibit cytomegalovirus (CMV), a type of herpes virus that is increasingly recognized as a contributor to disease. This virus is usually suppressed by the immune system, but it has become a serious problem with the rise of immune deficiency, induced as part of medical therapy or from other infections. However, CMV is also considered to be a contributor to atherosclerosis, a disorder that was not formerly thought to involve an infectious agent. In Taiwan, bidens is used as a folk remedy used for influenza, sore throat, enteritis, dysentery, jaundice, and intestinal carbuncle. Hu-chang is one of the broad-spectrum antiviral agents used in China; it was traditionally used in treating dysentery, leukorrhea, skin eruptions, and breast infections. The formula is prepared as a concentrated extract since the main active constituents are non-aromatic substances that need to be ingested in large quanities to have the desired effect.
