Clove warms the middle burner and directs rebellious qi downward; Warms the Kidneys and aids the yang

Ding Xiang (Clove Buds, ) is a traditional Chinese herb derived from Caryophyllus aromaticus. In TCM, it is classified as acrid and warm, entering the Kidney, Spleen, and Stomach channels. Ding Xiang is primarily used to warm the middle burner, regulate Qi, and direct rebellious Qi downward. It is also applied to strengthen Kidney yang, making it useful in patterns of cold affecting digestion or reproductive health.

Chinese Herb Profile:

  • Taste & Nature: Acrid, Warm
  • Channels Entered: Kidney, Spleen, Stomach
  • Key Actions: Warms the middle burner, directs rebellious Qi downward, supports Kidney yang
  • Common Uses: Vomiting, hiccups, abdominal pain, diarrhea from cold in the Stomach or Spleen; poor appetite from cold deficiency; impotence or clear vaginal discharge linked to Kidney yang deficiency

Traditional Notes:

  • Often compared to Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia fruit) for treating rebellious Qi, but Ding Xiang is generally preferred for hiccup or reflux.
  • Historical texts also describe its use to “unblock the pulse.”
  • Varieties such as “Male Clove” and “Mother Clove” are noted in traditional sources, with differences in potency and duration of effect.
  • Mu Ding Xiang is sometimes described as entering the Blood to invigorate circulation, promote labor, or used topically for cold-type gynecological concerns.
  • The bark of the same plant, Ding Xiang Pi (Cortex Caryophylli), is used separately to dispel cold and relieve pain.

Western Herbal Perspective

In Western herbal traditions, clove buds are regarded as a warming aromatic herb. They have been used to support digestion, relieve occasional bloating and gas, and freshen the breath. Clove’s essential oils, particularly eugenol, have also made it a traditional remedy for minor tooth and gum discomfort. Beyond medicinal use, clove has long been valued as a culinary spice, as well as an ingredient in perfumes and incense.

Appearance & Aroma:
Whole clove buds are dark brown, highly aromatic, and pungent, with a warm, spicy scent.

Storage Guidelines:
Keep stored in a tightly sealed container, away from heat and direct light, to preserve potency and aroma.

How to Make a Clove Mouthwash from Raw Buds

Clove buds have long been valued for their aromatic qualities and use in traditional oral care. A simple mouthwash can be prepared using the whole herb:

  1. Lightly crush 1–2 teaspoons of dried clove buds.
  2. Add them to 1 cup (8 oz) of freshly boiled water.
  3. Cover and steep for 15–20 minutes.
  4. Strain and allow to cool completely.
  5. Use as a mouth rinse, swishing for 30–60 seconds before spitting out. Do not swallow.

For added freshness, clove buds may be combined with other aromatic herbs such as peppermint leaf or cinnamon bark. Store any unused rinse in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
