Ge Gen Qin Lian Tang (Pueraria, Coptis, and Scutellaria Decoction) is a classical formula from Zhang Zhong-Jing’s Shang Han Lun. It is designed for patterns in which an unresolved exterior condition has led to the lodging of heat in the interior, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract. Ge Gen (pueraria root) releases the exterior and raises the clear yang, while Huang Lian and Huang Qin clear heat and dry dampness from the middle and lower burners, and Zhi Gan Cao harmonizes. Contraindications: Dysenteric disorders without fever and a submerged, slow pulse
