Contraindications: Methylene blue is a MAO inhibitor and therefore can interact with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and MAO inhibitors to cause serious serotonin toxicity. It also interacts with dapsone and forms hydroxylamine which oxidizes hemoglobin causing hemolysis. Methylene blue is a nitric oxide inhibitor. If patients are taking nitric oxide supplements to improve blood circulation, methylene blue may make them less effective.
