Juan Hou Po – Rolled Magnolia Bark
Juan Hou Po is the rolled or curled form of Magnolia officinalis bark, derived from the root bark and smaller branch bark of the Magnolia officinalis plant (also Magnolia officinalis var. biloba). The term “Juan” means “rolled” or “curled,” referring to the physical form of the bark rather than a distinct species or plant part. When dried, the thinner, more pliable root and branch bark naturally curls into tight tubes or quills, similar in appearance to cinnamon quills.
TCM Herb Profile
Juan Hou Po promotes the movement of qi in the middle burner and resolves stagnation. It promotes the movement of qi downward, dries dampness, and transforms phlegm. It also directs qi downward, reduces phlegm, and calms wheezing.
Quality and Grading
Traditionally, Juan Hou Po is considered the higher-quality form of Hou Po. The rolled root bark tends to have a more potent aroma, a stronger and more pungent taste, and a higher concentration of active constituents, particularly magnolol and honokiol. It also tends to have less of the outer cork layer, meaning a greater proportion of the active inner bark is present in the finished material.
The flat trunk bark of Magnolia officinalis is also used clinically, but is considered a step down in terms of potency and refinement compared to Juan Hou Po. When a formula calls for high-grade Hou Po, or when a more potent preparation is desired, Juan Hou Po is the preferred choice. It is the form most commonly specified in classical texts when quality is emphasized.
